Aberystwyth local Squash professional Rhys Evans will fly to Helsinki, Finland at the end of April with the senior Welsh Squash team to represent Wales at the European Squash Team Championships.
Rhys has already represented Wales in Squash at Junior level, but now looks set to make his debut for Wales in the top division of Squash in Europe after leaving the junior ranks in February this year.
The Welsh team that includes World ranked players such as Joel Makin, Tesni Evans, Peter Creed and Emyr Evans will face the top seeded team England in the pool stage, as well as facing Germany, Hungary and the hosts Finland respectively.
Matches start on Wednesday 26th April with a number of matches taking place on the all glass courts, some matches will be streamed LIVE online so we may get to see Rhys in action during the week.
Rhys started playing squash at Plascrug Leisure Centre along with his older brother Sion and his father Jason. Now Rhys is coached by several coaches such as National Coach Greg Tippings as well as Aberystwyth Squash Club Coach Damian Burgess who he is on court with Rhys most days as well as working him hard in the gym.
Speaking on his senior call up to the Welsh senior team Rhys said “I’m excited to link up with the senior team and hopefully play a part in the squad, I know most of the players well and it’s great to be among these top squash players for the week. I have been training hard on and off court and I feel I’m getting stronger all the time”
Everyone at Aberystwyth Squash Club would like to wish Rhys all the best in Finland. If you are feeling inspired by Rhys and want to get on court yourself, then Aberystwyth Squash Club have new Junior Squash and Adult classes. Lessons and classes can be booked online and are open to all ages and abilities. www.aberystwythsquash.club
